New Moon in Aquarius.

by Kirsten F.
Tomorrow's new moon in Aquarius is welcomed with open arms, and it's still Aquarius season so I'm feeling all of the love right now. New moon's have become one of my favorite times, it's when I shut myself off and check in mentally. Of course everyone uses their time differently, but I will say that allowing yourself to be grounded is a necessity. Turn off your phone, take yourself out to eat, run a hot bath, read a book, write, etc... Do whatever your spirit is wanting to do, listen to yourself and trust that whatever you conjure up know that it is destined to be yours if you want it to be.
Use this time to ask yourself the truth. What is it that you want out of this life? What are you doing to be present in your manifestations? What messages are your spirit guides giving you? What part of your self needs some extra attention? These are the questions that you should be asking yourself right now. Utilize the energy that the moon's blessing us with this weekend, there's no better time than the present to live the life you're meant for.
I wrote out my favorite new moon ritual below! Feel free to use it or tweak it to your liking, as always everyone's magick is different so use what you read as study guides!
Kirsten's Guide to The New Moon
1. Turn Off Social Media
It's been one hell of a week, and it's okay to check out of it all. Detach yourself from the world's issues and allow your mind to declutter. Go out into the world, hang out with your girls or your family. Go for a walk, and just sit in nature for a while. Give in to the beauty of the world we live in and appreciate her for all that she's blessed us with.
2. Take A Bath
(or shower!) with your favorite scents that make you feel centered and to add a little boost of energy. Use the crystal(s) that coincide with your personal manifestations, allow yourself to submerge in your own world. Get your favorite bath bomb, essential oils (peppermint oil is my jam right now), and your crystals and sit in the tub! Read a book, drink a glass of wine (or juice), and let your body speak to you!
3 . Do A Self Reading
I like to do a self reading during the new and full moon phases, I tend to find hidden messages from my spirit guides and those messages help me process my current phase better. Whatever your personal form of spiritual connection is. Use this time of self reflection to get to know your own guides better.
4. Take A Walk
There's nothing like going for a stroll in your favorite park, or going for a hike with friends! Being out in nature is the perfect way to find comfort in yourself, be inspired by the breeze, trees, green grass, or whatever is around you. Allow yourself to check out mentally and just flow with the vibes of nature!
5. Meditate
I light my candles, and cleanse my space with sage! I do this once a week any way, but since it is my daily ritual I always make sure to incorporate it into my new moon ritual as well. I also like to stretch during this time! Yoga, or just simple stretches always help me find my center! Also lighting a energizing incense scent can really add extra comfort to your meditation space.
6. Write Your New Moon Intentions.
This is a time for allowing yourself to dream and manifest your wildest dreams. Write down these intentions, write everything that you want to bring into your life. Whether that be love, financial stability, or even if you just want to be more organized. No matter what your intentions are they are yours, and once you write them down you are solidifying them. So be mindful about what you ask the universe to provide you with.
Leave me a comment below telling me about your favorite rituals to do during the new moon!
Weekly Zodiac Tarot Reading || 01.24.17
by Kirsten F.

Happy Tuesday everyone!
This weeks message is all about doing what you have to for yourself. We've reached a point in this lifetime where we know what's in store. We see the bigger picture and we're all (or most of us) are putting in the work to serve our divine purpose. Take the message this week and apply it to your life and see what happens. Manifest your destiny in 2017, and begin to find out who you are inside and out.
I used the Osho Zen Tarot deck for those who are interested, you can find this deck on Amazon it's not expensive and the cards are gorgeous. As always though purchase whatever deck speaks to you the most, and trust your instincts!
AIR (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra)
Letting Go
Free Fall, fly into the unknown, or vibing to a different frequency. No matter what you want to call it, it's time for you to put yourself first. Trust your gut feelings, and know that what you want out of this life will come to you if you breathe life into it. This week live the life you've been destined to live, dive deep within to find out what your purpose is and make it happen.
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
Compromise
Meet yourself in the middle my dear water sign, just like those two oceans in The Gulf of Alaska do. It's time for you to make time so that you can find balance within yourself. Where do all of your parts meet? How often are you checking in with yourself? If you've not been putting in any time with your own thoughts maybe give that a try this week. Five minutes of meditation will take you far in life. When you tune inward you tend to find out things about yourself that you never knew.
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)
Trust
Seems like the spirit guides are sending a very loud and extremely clear message this week. You're a tree and it's time for you to shake off your leaves and trust that new ones will grow into place. Just like the trees in nature it is necessary for us to also shed our branches. Changing spiritual seasons is needed throughout our lifetime. Remaining consistent gets you nowhere, neither does holding onto things that serve you no purpose. This week start writing down the things that you want most out of your life. Take some "you time" and allow whatever good is knocking on your door in. With the new moon coming this Saturday it's a good time to start manifesting your wants.
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)
Morality
Fire signs I'm going to keep this message for you simple... You are always valid in how you feel, but remember your feelings sometimes are just want you want them to be. It's time you realize that not everyone is who they are inside of your mind, you can't force people to be what you want them to be. Allow people to show you their truth and you'll end up finding your own instead. Your feelings towards other people are a reflection of yourself, and sometimes we tend to look past our actual reflections and pretend that it isn't there. My goal for you this week is to tell your truth, and accept it. Be yourself fire sign, and that will reflect in your relationships with other people.
The Importance of Period Food.
by Kirsten F.
For me it happens the week before I start my period, that instinct to find and hoard all of your favorite foods. In my case, that would be mangos, pizza, celery, peanut butter and s'mores flavored granola bars. Sometimes the occasional apple fritter and key lime pie find their way onto that list too. Now I don't know about you ladies, but when that moment clicks in my head I go into a sort of nesting mode. I check out for a week, and get to be with myself and all of my favorite things.
Photo Credit : FcukYeahSelena / Tumblr
Period food is my sense of comfort when I'm laying in bed with my tea and my hot hands. (Seriously hot hands were sent from heaven, and you can wear them anywhere.) I'm apart of a pretty bad ass ladies group on Facebook. So I reached out to my girls to ask what their favorite period food is. These women lit up with excitement to talk about what brings them comfort during a time where we get to physically cleanse our bodies in a sometimes draining way. These foods may be sugar filled, natural, or it may just be a fruit but they all have one thing in common. They make us feel good and we should be proud of what brings us joy, can we spend this year doing that? Just celebrating what makes us happy, and be an unstoppable force.
Think about that this week gals, and do what makes you happy! Check out this list of women who get real about their period cravings!

10 Step Korean Skincare Routine
From beauty balms to face masks, Korean beauty and skincare has always been setting trends and making its way to the US. The latest craze is the 10 step Korean skincare routine, which many beauty gurus and sites have been raving about. A skincare routine consisting of 10 steps sounds ridiculously tedious but still, I was curious. I'm also looking to step up my skincare routine for 2017 so I decided to do some research. Not to mention, you don't do all 10 steps every day... that's just insane and time consuming! Keep reading to learn what the 10 step Korean skincare routine consists of.
10 Step Korean Skincare Routine
(via Giphy)
1. Makeup Remover and Oil Cleanser
(via Giphy)
The very first step to improving your skincare routine is by properly removing your makeup at the end of the day. Oil cleansers are another current craze in the makeup world and they work very well! According to Soko Glam, you massage the oil cleanser onto your face as you would with any other cleanser.
2. Water-based Cleanser
Follow the oil cleanser with a water-based cleanser to make sure you get rid of all the leftover residue and makeup! This "double-cleansing" step sounds a bit repetitive but it'll ensure you with squeaky clean skin.
3. Exfoliation
After cleansing your skin, exfoliate to get rid of any dead skin. This will bring newer, clearer skin to the surface. Make sure to exfoliate up to two times a week. Exfoliating more often than that could worsen your skin, making it dry, flaky, and sensitive. Trust me, I made the mistake before and my skin broke out.
4. Toner
(via Giphy)
Spraying toner or applying it with a cotton swab helps balance the pH levels of your skin. It also helps your skin lock in hydration more effectively. Who knew there was so much science to skincare and beauty?!
5. Essence
According to Soko Glam, essence is "the heart of a Korean skincare routine." Essence helps to hydrate and repair your skin, as well as promoting skin cell turnover for newer, fresher skin!
6. Serums, Boosters, and Ampoules
Soko Glam says this is the "skin-perfecting step" to your routine. Serums, boosters, and ampoules can target a range of skin concerns from brightening to pore refining and many more! Pick a product to target any skin concern you want to fight. For me, it would be acne. The most important part is how you apply it -- it's all about tapping the product into your skin!
7. Sheet Masks
Just like exfoliating, you use sheet masks once or twice a week. Sheet masks also target a variety of skin concerns. You apply it onto your face for 10-15 minutes and you can chill out while doing so! I like to lay down and meditate with a sheet mask on. It's one of the ultimate self-care, spa day routines for me.
8. Eye Cream
(via Giphy)
Applying eye cream helps to hydrate and reduce wrinkles around the eye area. You can apply it at night or under your makeup. Just like serums and boosters, it's all about tapping the product into your skin!
9. Moisturizer
Moisturizing is the key step to any skincare routine. It doesn't matter if you have dry skin, oily skin, or combination skin. You want to make sure your skin stays hydrated.
10. Sun Protection
(via Giphy)
Applying sunscreen is just as important as moisturizing! It helps to protect your skin and slow down the process of aging skin. To kill two birds with one stone, you can find a moisturizer with SPF in it!
That's the 10 step Korean skincare routine! Doesn't sound too bad, right? So how about it... who else wants to try this with me?
Film Review: Hidden Figures
by Emery W.
I don't know where to begin when reviewing a movie as monumental as Hidden Figures. This film is so inspiring and educational. It's quite possibly the best film based on a true story I've seen. Honestly, it's probably because the story centers around people like me; African-American women.
Long story short, Hidden Figures tells the story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson (portrayed by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae respectively) as three women who work for NASA as human computers during the '60's when America first put man in space.
Though their stories intertwine as a strong female friendship, each of these incredible women have their own personal story to tell of how they changed the face of math and science forever.
Katherine Johnson, a math prodigy, is brought from the Black wing of the space program to create and solve equations that inevitably put the first man in orbit. Tackling a mountain of racial and gender barriers, Johnson eventually does the impossible, and becomes more than a computer. She becomes an integral part of the team. Henson does a stupendous job of portraying the journey of a woman who starts in the background of a room to the forefront of an entire operation. Her bathroom scene ( I won't go into details) brought me to tears, and made the whole theater erupt in applause. If you thought Taraji P. Henson is a Cookie Lyon typecast actress, watch this film, and be immediately proved wrong.
Dorothy Vaughan is the woman who *spoiler alert* eventually becomes the first African-American supervisor for NASA. So not only is she a ground-breaker for women, but people of color as well. Octavia Spencer has always been a Goddess on-screen in my opinion, and this role is another addition to a list of roles that has made me fall in love with her.
The one thing about the film I would tweak is the story behind Mary Jackson. While Janelle Monae undoubtedly did an exceptional job with the role, I wish I'd been shown more of Jackson's story. It's an inspirational look into how one of the most brilliant minds in the world was silenced because of the color of her skin. In fact, the initial problem with the space orbit may not have happened if this woman was given a fair chance to get her degree. I just wish the film showed more of her work with N ASA. However, what did feature Jackson was extraordinary.
I give this film a solid 10/10. I'll buy it, watch it, and share it with future generations. I'm so thankful that this film was made because it's a part of Black history that wasn't featured in my books.

" Pizza, P I Z Z A" those are the only words I remember from that one Mary Kate & Ashley song from the 90s. This isn't about them though, this is about the BEST pizza restaurants across our nation. Maybe you've also tried these places, or if you haven't then if you're ever in that state/city you can!

6 Reasons Why Lorelai Gilmore is ULTIMATE Mom Goals.
By Kirsten F.
Lorelai Gilmore is hands down the coolest mom to grace television screens. Her extensive knowledge of music and take out menus alone is impressive.
1. She actually has friendship with her child
The relationship that Rory and her mother have is #BestFriendGoals . Their connection often has people raising their eyebrows, but that’s because they don’t understand it. You will never see a better example of a healthy and honest mother/daughter relationship.
2. When it comes to music, Lorelai is the woman to go to.
Anyone with great musical knowledge is someone I would like to hang out with. I mean she took her daughter and her daughters friends to see The Bangles. #WINNER #MomGoals
3. She’s ALWAYS down to eat
How many people can say their mom can chow down on a large pizza, a burger from Luke’s, a mystery meal from Al’s Pancake World, and still have room for dessert? Only Lorelai Gilmore can, that’s who! Her metabolism has to have the speed of light, because I’ve never seen anyone pack down as much food as her.
4. She sacrificed a lot so that Rory could have the life she deserved.
Any great parent will tell you that they will sacrifice ANYTHING and EVERYTHING for their children. That's what Lorelai has done, even though she never got along with her own mother. She went against her better judgement so that Rory could go to the BEST school possible. So that her Ivy League dreams were in reach.
5. She’s never afraid to crack a joke
Who doesn’t love a good Mom joke every once in awhile? Lorelai’s got jokes for days, the woman is a walking knock knock punch line. Although some of her antidotes are just her way of getting out of situations, Lorelai never fails to make you smile.
6. When you need a shoulder to cry on LG’s got your back.
No matter if it was Rory, Lane or another Stars Hollow neighbor Lorelai was always there for people. When Rory had her first break up Lorelai was there with the “Post break up disaster kit”. When Babette’s cat died, LG was there for her with open arms. Sure she has her faults, and there have been times that I even questioned her judgment. However, one thing is for sure… Lorelai Gilmore is the person that I would always want to have in my corner.

With that being said, what do you do when your new phase affects others? You can’t let that fact stop you from becoming who you’re supposed to! It’s impossible to please others, and to be honest the only one who you need to please is… YOU. Life is to short to not follow your gut and your dreams. We encourage the phrase “bad bitches never lose” here, and sure it may be a little progressive and unconventional. However that’s what we’re all about and the reason being is because we believe that being a bad ass is everything. Not in the “let’s rough people up + be delinquents ” way, but in the “we demand what we want out of this life + don’t apologize for it” way. Bad bitches never lose because we have NO competition, we are in our own world. We don’t even compete with ourselves, because we just merely exist and do our thing. That’s the lesson this week, is to be the baddest you can be… Just be you. Do your thing and focus on YOUR own goals because no one is greater than you, and no one can do what you can. Go out into this world, and be great.

Top Five Places To Eat In Georgia
by Kirsten F.
*Please note, these are all of MY favorites, not your trash ones. jk.*
Eating out is one of my favorite activities to do, albeit I don't do it often (it ain't cheap!) I still love to dine out every once in awhile with my lady gang! I've compiled a list of MY favorite restaurants in and near Atlanta, GA. Each of these places aren't expensive at all, because I'm a lady who likes to eat, but HATES to spend hella coins on things.
Cheap treats friends, cheap treats.
1. Little Five Pizza, Atlanta, GA
This may just be (read: it is) my FAVORITE pizza place in the entire world. L5 Pizza is one of the most interesting establishments. It’s small, but never overcrowded especially during lunch time. There’s always something great blasting from the speakers, and two interesting topics taped to their tip jars.
Favorite Spot to Sit: Outside on their patio, under the umbrella tables.
Best Slice: The White pizza; Delicious cheesy goodness.
2. Bank Street Cafe, Griffin, GA
Have you ever wondered where in the world you can get perfect brunch and the best tasting mimosas? It’s Bank Street that has both of those qualities. In this small town, this resturant has become a weekend staple for most. Whether you’re enjoying a beer outside on a Friday night with live music, or you’re hanging out with the girls on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Bank Street has a vibe of family, and comradery that’ll make you never want to leave.
Favorite Spot to Sit: Upstairs near the bar.
Best Dish: Pimento Cheese Toast (Brunch item)
3. The Vortex, Atlanta, GA
Ever wondered what it would feel like getting kicked out of a eating establishment? Just fix your lips to say something rude to the hardworking individuals at The Vortex, and they will most definitely throw you out. Not only is the environment super dope, the food is DELICIOUS. For all of my meat eaters out there do yourself a favor and order their Dixie Wrecked Taters! Your taste buds will bless you. Vegans and vegetarians don’t worry they have options for us to! Can't make it to Little Five? Don't worry, they've got a second location in Midtown!
Favorite Spot to Sit: Upper level covered patio
Best Dish: Everything, literally nothing is bad.
4. Bell Street Burrito, Atlanta, GA
Whoever said Chipotle had the best burritos LIED, and they’ve never had the pleasure of sinking their teeth into one of Bell Streets succulent burritos. Also we have to talk about the most important thing; guacamole! The guac here is the perfect amount of creamy with a lot of bold flavor. Bell Street not only has fantastic food, but the best customer service! Check them out if you’re in town!
Favorite Place to Sit: I’ve only ever had their catered food!
Best Dish: Veggie Burrito (seriously it’s so good)
5. Chin Chin 2
This is possibly my favorite lunch spot in all of Atlanta. Chin Chin 2 is a Pan-Asian spot right on Ponce in the same parking lot as Murder Kroger (RIP). They deliver, which to be honest is my favorite thing about any city; quality delivery options. They’re prices are “pay day” affordable , and their sushi is outstanding as well. They also have a TON of veggie options for my non meat eating pals!
Favorite Place to Sit: Wherever it got delivered to
Best Dish: Avocado Spring Rolls
Restaurant Review: The Gallatin Riverhouse Grill
By Kirsten F.
I’ve traveled far and wide while stuffing my face the entire way. Food is a form of comfort to me, and as a vegetarian I tend to find things that I can eat almost anywhere. This past week my travels lead me to what I now deem the home of the “greatest macaroni and cheese on Earth”. The Gallatin Riverhouse Grill in a small (and I do mean small) town called Big Sky in the mountains of Montana.
If you ever find yourself on a trip to Yellowstone, you’ll see the signs for Big Sky which is about an hour North of the national park. My aunt and I found ourselves visiting this place during one of our pit stops! The atmosphere reminded me of a local restaurant in my hometown + even though we were the only black folks in that place it wasn’t uncomfortable! I’ve visited some places before and have definitely felt the “difference”. It wasn’t very busy and that’s probably because it was the middle of the night, and most people were sound asleep in their homes.
If you’re a big meat eater, then this is the place for you! They have an assortment of BBQ, and fried meat options! However as a non-meat eater, I have become the Queen of side menu items. I chose their Mac + Cheese, Fried Okra, and ate some of their very tasty onion rings.
I have never in my life dug into such delicious food, their Macaroni was so creamy and so damn cheesy my whole life was changed. I pride myself on being a fried okra specialist, it’s hands down my favorite food and being from The South I know what good okra is! This little place in the middle of Montana rivals some of the best southern fried okra, if we’re being honest it might be in the number one spot of my favorites! Seriously, if you’re ever in Big Sky give this place a chance and I promise you will not be disappointed. Good food, GREAT prices, and an atmosphere that’ll make you want to stay forever!

Why 2016 is Not the Worst Year So Far.
by Emery W.
This year has been tumultuous to say the least. Everyone goes in to a new year with high expectations, and 2016 is no different. However, instead of a fresh start and continuing to grow with the great steps taken during 2015, it feels as if we’ve been pushed back 100 years. I could go into detail on the many things that have happened this year that made other countries question our sanity, but instead I’m going to highlight the things that made our country stronger as a nation.
1. Awareness of Mental Health Issues
There are still tons of negative thoughts and ideas on mental health. Lots of people don’t see them as the delicate situations that they are. I’ve noticed this year that so many people have decided to come forward with their battles with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Not only have celebrities raised their voices on the subject, but words of encouragement and support have sprouted on social media. Friends of those with issues have been posting the numbers to suicide hotlines, or just lending a friendly ear to anyone who needs a shoulder to cry on in private.
2. Black Lives Matter Movement
One of the things that make me proud to be an African American woman is knowing that there’s an army of people behind me willing to fight for my right to be free. The injustices that have been placed on minorities for centuries has reared its ugly head more than ever this year. The people who are meant to protect us have become the ones our brothers and sisters have begun to fear. The great thing about the BLM Movement is that the soldiers who have been protesting and supporting people of color all fall on different colors of the spectrum. It’s such a breakthrough from the civil rights issues of the past. Men and women of all nationalities are no longer afraid to stand with us. Black or not, these brave souls are the ones I consider brothers and sisters. And what should scare our foes the most? This is only the beginning.
3. Health Care
The health and well-being of all of America’s citizens have been placed on the back burner this year. The fight against planned parenthood, rising cost of Epi Pens, and the state of the water in Flint, Michigan are only some of the examples. What’s cool though is seeing so many people rally together to expose the rich and high and mighty for the crooks that they really are. They are literally making our conditions worse so that we are forced to go to them to heal. It’s outrageous. But the blind are no longer leading the blind. The educated are coming forth to fight for what’s right. Activists, journalists, reporters, etc. are opening our eyes to what these people are really like, and as a nation we are finding ways to fight back. It’s empowering.
4. Sexuality
There will never not be someone who disagrees with someone else’s lifestyle. The tragedy in Florida reminded us of that. It hit us hard as a nation to watch the lives of innocent people taken away because at the root of everything, people fear what’s different. You can blame terrorists or whoever you’d like to point a finger at, but not since 9-11 have I seen so many people come together to love. The LGBTQ community is so incredibly proud of who they are, and seeing their pride makes me happy to be a supporter of their rights. If you think of what it was like even 10 years ago, compared to now, you’ll see the massive strides being made to
bring equality. More celebrities came out this year than any other I can remember, and so many of them young people! It’s beautiful.
5. Hillary Clinton
All I can say is, we just had our first female major contender for the President of the United States. It didn’t work in our favor, but this is not the end. It’s our time, ladies. This is no longer a man’s world.
These are only a few of the things that have made 2016 a year that’s not as bad as everyone has attempted to make it out to be. There have been massive strides made this year that are paving America in the right direction. It may seem like we took 100 years’ worth of steps backwards last month when our new POTUS was elected, but it will not last. We stand strong as a growing nation. So, I say to you, enjoy what this year has brought us; Netflix and chill with whoever you love, light a joint, and join a movement. 2016 was only the first step.
Top Five Holiday Films
by Emery W.
Christmas; almost everyone’s both favorite, and most hated part of the year. A time when the hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers causes even the sweetest of souls to show their dark side (aka, retail workers. Bless your souls). However, it’s also a great time to get together with family and close friends to remind each other what the real reason for Christmas is.
One of my favorite past times has always been spending cold, weekend nights in when the occasional Texas winter would rear its icy little head. As a kid, up until now, I still love putting on pajamas, making hot chocolate and popcorn, and watching some of my favorite Christmas films with the people I love most. The only difference is that the hot chocolate may have hint of Khaluah in it.
I’ve compiled a short list of my five favorite holiday films to watch during the snowy season
1. A Christmas Story
Any film that is played for 24 hours straight on any holiday is worth the top title. I’ll admit, I lived 24 years of life before sitting down to watch this movie from start to finish, and I was not disappointed. A great watch for all-ages, A Christmas Story provides a good message, lots of laughs, and quite possibly one of the greatest lines in Christmas cinematic history, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”
2. E.L.F.
Another family-friendly comedy starting none other than the hilarious Will Ferrell himself. A film that teaches everyone about the true spirit of the holidays, and the importance of family. Not to mention, we get to see a rare, bangless and blonde Zooey Deschanel.
3. Ron Howard’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas
One of my best friends from college watches this movie year-round, and there’s no wonder why. It modernizes a children’s classic, and gives flesh to cartoon drawings. It holds true to the core values of the Dr. Seuss book while making it meaningful to both children and adults.
4. The Holiday
A movie that’s on its way to becoming a true classic. I’ve seen a lot of people try to compare this film to Love, Actually (which I’ve never seen), and this film is given a higher rating. Possibly because it’s’ newer. In my opinion, it’s wholesome and sweet. The idea of trading houses with someone from another country is incredible if you’re into that sort of thing. It follows the story of both women beautifully, splitting screen time equally. A must-watch.
5. A Christmas Carol
There are numerous versions of this Dickens’ Christmas classic to choose from, and all of them will tell the story brilliantly. Yes, even the Muppets. The timeless tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, and how the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future guide him through his life, and teach him the true meaning of the holiday season.
While there are so many amazing Christmas movies, it’d be impossible to list them all. These are the five that are a must-watch. There’re eight days left until Christmas. I suggest you grab some snacks, and get to watching!
Social Media & Relationships
by Emery W.
Social media is both the best and worst invention of the 21st century. The way you feel about it is determined by the way you use it.
For example, the first social media forum I used was Myspace back in high school. It was an excellent way to communicate with friends outside of school. Next came Facebook which I decided to start using somewhere around my senior year of high school. It soon became a way for me to find old friends I’d forgotten about while simultaneously keep up with the people I knew in high school after we’d graduated.
Enter the college years, and it soon went from a hotspot for friends to a meeting ground for every extracurricular activity I participated in. Meeting and rehearsal times were all posted on Facebook group pages, or group chats.
Now in my late 20’s I use most social media outlets, except for Instagram, as a way of networking. The cool thing about Facebook and Twitter are that they’re great ways to get your name and business out in the universe. As a writer, I use my profile as a way for people to get in touch with me for questions and comments.
Here’s where things get complicated. There are a few souls out here who don’t see the purpose of setting up two separate social media accounts; one personal and one professional. In my opinion, juggling the two simply takes up too much time, and causes a lot of confusion. With my luck, I’d post something that’s meant for my personal profile on my professional page, and all hell immediately breaks loose.
Twitter, however, is a completely different story. I’m not sure why, but something about Tweeting makes me feel safer than posting a Facebook status. I’m not sure if it’s because of the character limit, or because so few of the people I encounter on an everyday basis use Twitter. I tend to be more open, and more likely to vent on Twitter which has recently gotten me in some relationship troubles. The reason you should never post anything pertaining to relationship woes on the internet, no matter how safe you think you are, is because nothing on the internet is a secret. It will always get back around to whomever it is you’re trying to hide from. This is my personal hate part of my relationship with social media.
Now, I know an easy fix is to just not post personal feelings on the internet, even in the heat of a moment, but in my case, that’s easier said than done. Personally, I think my account is mine to do with what I will, and if I want the whole world to know my best friend pissed me off one day then damn it, I’ll tell them! But it’s not fair on the other side if things. Placing myself in the other person’s shoes completely changes my opinion of what I post online. Even if the page and thoughts are my own, putting those feelings out for everyone to see doesn’t affect only me. It impacts the life of the person I’m referencing.
I guess what I’m trying to get at is; use social media at your own risk, or risk the relationships you have with others.
5 Ways to Observe Veterans Day
by Emery W.
Veteran’s Day is celebrated in November every year, and most all-American families see it as another occasion to get together, fire up the grill, and knock back a few drinks. While I love a good barbeque myself, it’s not exactly the kind of recognition our military men and women deserve. So, to help you out, here are a few ideas on how to respectfully celebrate Veteran’s Day.
1. Visit a Veteran’s Hospital
What better way can you think of to make a person’s day better than a friendly chat? The soldiers injured while fighting for our country deserve to feel appreciated. It’s super easy to search the internet for your nearest VA hospital, and pay a short visit.
2. Find an Event in Your Community
Veteran’s Day is a national holiday so the chance of there being a celebration or event in your community is high. It’s a great chance to meet other people in your area, and pay homage to our soldiers.
3. Get the Children Involved
Being crafty is easy, and the kids LOVE getting involved with anything exciting. Learning something in the process is a plus. Here’s a great link to a few fun crafts and activities you can do with your kids to observe Veteran’s Day.
4. Sport Yellow
Yellow is the color to support our troops. Wearing a yellow ribbon or flower is a good way to show support and respect for the men and women in service.
5. Treat Every Day Like Veteran’s Day
Having a day dedicated to appreciate our veterans isn’t quite enough. Acknowledge anyone you see in uniform any time. Write a letter, donate to a cause, and/or visit a VA hospital regularly. There’s never enough you can do for people who lay their life on the line for your safety and freedom.
These are only a handful of ways to respectfully honor Veterans. Take the time to do some research, and make someone else’s day a little brighter.
Top Six Halloween Films
By Emery W.
It’s the spookiest time of the year… Especially in cinema!
he world is full of “scary” movies. Those meant to haunt our nightmares for endless evenings. I’ll be the first to admit that I had to watch The Little Mermaid, and at least three episodes of Spongebob Squarepants after seeing Insidious the first time because of how scared I was.
Yet, as scary as that film (and others) are, these are my top six favorite movies that really scream, “Halloween!”
Scary movies aren’t reserved solely for October 31st, but the ones I have listed deserve an unspoken place on the shelves of all-things Halloween.
#6. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Ah. Tim Burton. The man who creates the creepiest, yet not incredibly scary movies. Something about the dark, spooky atmosphere of all of his films sparks Halloween vibes without sending the viewer into a heart attack. With that being said, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic for all families that stems the line between both Halloween and Christmas so take your pick as to when you choose to watch it. Hell, if you’re like me, you watch it for both holidays.
#5. The Craft/The Covenant
If you’re into magic, witchcraft, and witches that aren’t green and ride brooms, then this is a movie for you. Another one that isn’t a horror or thriller flick, but definitely great to watch during the season. If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. If you’re in the mood, there’s an all-male cast version with the same kind of concept, but not quite as cult category worthy. Both are still great films.
#4. t’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
A classic, and safe for all-ages. If your elementary school teachers didn’t push in the TV cart with VCR around Halloween time, and show you this movie then you are truly missing out on life.
#3. Halloween Town Series
We grew up with Marnie, and sat biting our nails watching her discover that she’s a witch, and harness her powers. Talk about a fierce role model for young girls. Disney Channel did something completely right when they made this series. The only real left-turn they took was recasting the actress who portrays Marnie in the last film. But hey, new Marnie or not, a good franchise is a good franchise.
#2. Halloween Series
Michael Myers. The masked man who haunted my dreams for years. This is one of the scary movies everyone wants to watch if they want to be legitimately scared. Full of silent-inducing terror, and blood, the whole series is a must-watch. Just make sure it’s the old-school series, and not the remake.
#1. Hocus Pocus
e title says it all. Hocus Pocus is the epitome of all things Halloween. It doesn’t matter when you were born, this film is a cult classic, and must-see. So much so that I will not give away any plot details because you should watch for yourself. Just don’t be surprised if you find my future son named Thackery.
Long story short, if you want to really get in the spirit of Halloween, turn off the lights, grab some popcorn, and watch in one, if not all, of these films.
7 Gilmore Girls Watch Party Must Haves.
by Emery W.
SEVEN MORE DAYS!!!!
Alright guys, we are officially seven days away from Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, and I don’t know about y’all, but I’m not able to contain my excitement any more.
Now, if you haven’t been following the watch schedule I came up with last month, mic.com has a great list of the most important episodes to watch before the revival. Catch up on said episodes, then come November 25, make sure you have these seven must-haves for your GG watch party.
1. Vicious Trollop
You can’t start a revival party without looking the part. One of my favorite episodes is when Lorelai and Emily spend a mother-daughter weekend together, and eventually bond over their love of Vicious Trollop; a perfect pink lip shade. Not only can you find the product online (which I urge everyone to do), but if you don’t have time to get it, just wear your favorite pinkish-red color. When you do, tag us on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat with the tag #OTEViciousTrollop. We’ll repost our favorite ones!
2. Coffee
You don’t have to watch every episode of Gilmore Girls to know that our favorite mother-daughter pair are the epitome of coffee addicts. Make a pot (or 10), and drink up!
3. Food
Lorelai and Rory are the kind of women that every other woman hates; they eat every that’s considered wrong yet their bodies always look right! I suggest for this night only to binge Gilmore Girls style. Order a pizza, Chinese, buy some Pop Tarts, marshmallows, Red Vines, and anything else that makes you want to vomit. Even add an apple in there for good measure.
4. Team Swag
The one thing everyone is talking about is which of Rory’s old flames she’ll inevitably end up with. In my opinion, I don’t think she’ll end up with any of them because she’s a fierce woman in her own right. However, if my greatest dreams were to come true, Team Jess will prevail. For the occasion get creative, and show us your best take on your team’s swag. Sport a leather jacket if you love Dean, wear your favorite band tee in homage to Jess, or have an umbrella handy if you’re a Logan lover. Use the tag #OTETeam, and show us who your favorite guy for Rory is. Extra points of you can make good use of our favorite underdog, Marty.
5. The Rory
Who remembers the posh 21st birthday party Emily threw for Rory in season 6? I know I do, and I’ve always wanted to try Rory’s signature drink, The Rory. The characters on the show don’t think too highly of it, but it’s up to you to make your own opinion. I won’t give you the recipe. You’ll have to watch the episode yourself to get it.
6. Your Favorite Book
Rory is the ultimate book worm. You’ll remember in season 2 when she and Lorelai take an impromptu trip to Harvard, and Rory freaks out over not having read enough books in her 16 years of life. Make sure you have your favorite page-turner with you. You get major props if it’s a Proust.
7. Kleenex
The feels that this revival are already more than I can handle so Kleenex will undoubtedly be required for this four-episode extravaganza. Make sure you’re stocked up.
We here at On The Edge will be live-watching the revival the moment it releases on Netflix next Friday, and we want you to join us and me this an interactive experience. Get your revival items, log onto and follow us on all our social media accounts, and live this tale with us.
